Spaceballs

Mel Brooks, USA, 1987, 96 minutes

The plot of the sci-fi spoof Spaceballs concerns one planet's attitude and another planet's attitude - the goodies and the baddies. The baddies' planet is called Spaceballs. It's led by the dastardly President Skroob (Mel Brooks). Running out of air, it goes out to steal the air supply of the neighbouring planet, Druidia. The "Spaceballs" have a typical Nazi type of attitude, which is excellent. Their mode of punishment, if you do anything wrong, is also really good.

Throughout Spaceballs, there are many references to other science fiction films including Star Wars, Star Trek and The Planet of the Apes. The acting of the cast (including John Candy, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman) is suitably corny. Instead of Chewbacca, we have John Candy dressed in a cat suit (I don't mean the sort that Michelle Pfeiffer wore in Batman Returns) complete with real tail. At the end of the day, if you like yoghurt you'll be okay. Watch out for the cleaning lady!
